The Housemaid (2025)

The Housemaid (2025) is a psychological thriller directed by Paul Feig, adapted from Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel. The story revolves around Millie Calloway, played by Sydney Sweeney, a young woman with a troubled past who takes a job as a live‑in housemaid for the Winchester family.  Her goal is simple at first: rebuild her life and leave behind what haunts her. But what seems like a lifeline soon reveals a darker, more dangerous reality.

Millie arrives at the Winchester mansion, where Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried), her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), their daughter Cecelia, and the rest of their grand household appear to live an enviable existence.  Nina offers Millie comfort and belonging: giving her a key to her room, insisting she should feel safe, making the mansion seem like a refuge.  Yet cracks begin to show. Strange behaviors. Ominous secrets. Other people whose roles are ambiguous, including a groundskeeper named Enzo (played by Michele Morrone).

As Millie settles in, the tension escalates. The film teases plenty of mysteries: doors locked, hidden bruises, shifting loyalties, silent alarms.  It becomes clear that the Winchester family’s perfect façade hides dangerous truths—perhaps more dangerous than those Millie herself is trying to bury.

A key part of the drama comes from the question of trust. Who is hiding what? How much can Millie trust her employers, and how much are they watching her? At the same time, Millie’s own secrets slowly emerge, and the audience is left guessing how her past will collide with the present.

The themes of deception, class disparity, identity, and the fragility of appearances loom large. The Housemaid is not just about what is seen in the grand rooms of the mansion, but about what is buried in the shadows—both of the physical house and of its inhabitants’ lives. Millie must decide whether to survive by burying more, or by exposing truths that could destroy everything.

The promise of the film lies in its combination of rich atmosphere, strong character work (especially between Millie and Nina), and plot twists that challenge expectations. With its release set for December 19, 2025, The Housemaid aims to be a thriller that not only shocks but also makes viewers think about how easily secrets can masquerade as normalcy.
